Whoever fights monsters should see to it that in the process he does not become a monster. And when you look into an abyss, the abyss also looks into you.

Endorsements

On October 18, 2001, our group endorsed the American Civil Liberties Union letter concerning Sneak and Peek Search Warrants on Anti-Terrorism Legislation. See some Clinton Favors Computer Snooping in Wired News by Declan McCullagh and the related Politech post Letter asks Congress to nix "secret searches" from USA Act for more information.

Tasks

On October 29, 2001, citizenq began the task of creating a a red-line version of the "USA" bill and reduce it down to real language so that the changes can be seen and assessed. Anyone interested in assisting with that task please e-mail him at the address above.

April 24, 2002: We need specific information about privacy/cryptography software like CryptoHeaven, PGP, Hushmail and alike. Software like CryptoHeaven ensures great privacy for communications online like electronic mail, instant messaging, and file sharing. PGP is an established email based encryption and Hushmail web based email encryption.

Upcoming Meetings

Due to the rapid developments of legislation against cryptography and the use of encryption, planning meetings need to be scheduled on short notice to accomplish as much as possible in very little time. If you have a group of like-minded people who would like one of us to come to your meeting in the Baltimore/DC area, or a meeting to announce in another area of the country, please e-mail the details to us to add it to this list.

The next D.C.-area meeting will be held on Tuesday, October 2, 2001 at a venue nearby to Metro Center. Details will be posted to this list as they become available.

Working Group Charter

After the tragedies of September 11th, the American people have become willing to trade certain civil liberties in exchange for national and personal security. We are a group of people who fear that essential liberties may be lost, possibly permanently, in the aftermath. We don't want to minimize or otherwise trivialize the horrible events that have precipitated these conditions, but we also do not want our nation to lose the freedoms that have made it the paramount nation for business and personal expression.

Our current goal is to make sure our Congressional representatives and other governmental policymakers are aware of the importance of encryption to this country's people, businesses, and economy. We want to impress upon our representatives the fact that encryption is not a weapon to be outlawed but an essential tool that cannot be legislated away without severe consequences.

We need to carefully consider the consequences of currently proposed encryption legislation. There are very powerful applications of encryption and related technologies that are essential to the functioning of this nation. It is this awareness that we wish to promote.
