Commissioners,
I will not be able to attend Wednesday's meeting in person but I was inspired to write you this letter to thank you for continuing to establish Montgomery County as a safe place for all residents regardless of race, orientation, gender, or status.
With the recent over tenfold increase in federal funding for ICE it will become increasingly difficult to hold this line but is critical to maintaining the protections of habeas corpus and personal dignity that is enshrined in our Constitution for all human beings, not only citizens.
Today Richard Kosich published an editorial urging residents to attend tomorrow's meeting and try to encourage the county to change its position on signing a 287(g) agreement and enforcing ICE detainers. You may hear more voices saying not capitulating to ICE demands is a sign of weakness would invite danger to our community.
Please do not be convinced that your actions to protect all people within our municipal boundaries is any kind of weakness. Quite the opposite, they are a sign of strength and compassion in equal measure that I sincerely thank you for upholding.
Very respectfully, Rob Carlson
